One notable element is the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST), a trail that follows much of the rim of the lake, atop the dike, offering views of water on one side and land, marsh and woods on the other.
The scenic route today combines roads, overlooks, fishing piers, interpretive signs and trail segments—bringing together engineering, nature, history and recreation in one continuum.
The Visual Experience: Scenery, Wildlife and Water
Driving or walking the scenic route around Lake Okeechobee gives the visitor a wide palette of experience—open horizon, shimmering flats, distant tree lines, rising birds, and occasionally storms sweeping across the water.
Parts of the route reveal the lake’s shallow extent (average depth only ~9 ft/2.7 m) despite its vast size.
Other sections offer vantage points over extension marshes, islands, levees and canals. Wildlife is abundant—fish, birds, marsh mammals and aquatic plants all contribute to the scene. The mixture of engineered and natural features adds a complex dimension to the vistas. shutdown123
